Cosmetology Program at WHS
The cosmetology course at Westerly High School is RIDE Certified Career and Technical Program. This CTE program is a three year program, that is designed for students interested in the cosmetology industry. The program encourages creativity both hands on and in theory. During the course of the program students will have the opportunity to learn current styles and styling techniques nail care, and skin care.
At the end of studentís second year, or once 1,000 hours are accrued, the student has the opportunity to complete an internship at a salon. During this time, students will work along side a licensed cosmetologist as an apprentice. This work study placement can not be in place of classroom hours, nor are hours accrued for time in apprenticeship.
At the culmination of the third year, and once 1,500 hours are accrued students may apply to take their state board examination. This examination is both written and practicum. Students must score 70% or above on their written exam to be able to take the practicum portion of the examination. Students within the Cosmetology program at Westerly High School practice both portions of the test beginning with their first year, in preparation for State Boards.
Once the student is licensed as a cosmetologist, he or she may then work as a cosmetologist doing hair, nails and waxing at a salon or spa. No additional schooling is required once the requirements of 1,500 hours are met and once the State Board Examination is passed.
